A group of young university castellers from the Vila de Sarrià wanted to grow the cultural movement in the district and enjoy one of the most deeply rooted branches of Catalan cultural heritage, learning and having fun. So, in November 2016, the first meeting was held at Casa Orlandai to re-establish the Castellers de Sarrià, which was attended by neighbours and various families with children.
The colla was created with the aim of building community spirit in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi through the values of casteller: cooperation, cohesion and integration, solidarity, teamwork and plural and intergenerational communication.
This neighbourhood had already had a colla castellera that was founded in the autumn of 1999 and entered into crisis in 2004, until it was discontinued the following year. During that period, they built a two-by-six, a five-by-six and carried a five-person pillar.
In May 2017, the group became part of the Coordinadora de Colles Castelleres de Catalunya (Coordinating Committee of Casteller Groups of Catalonia) as a group in formation. And on 8 October 2017, during the casteller day of the Sarrià Festival, the group presented itself to the people by dismantling the first three-by-six since its re-founding.
In June 2018, the first complete performance took place in Gavà, with two pillars of four, one four of six, one three of six and one three of six with a pillar being unloaded.
At the 2018 Sarrià Festival, the crimson shirt was unveiled, chosen through a participatory process within the group and an open design competition. It recovers the original colour of the old group (inspired by the banner of Santa Eulàlia, believed to be from Sarrià) and adds the Sarrià shell on the back, the town’s coat of arms.
On 27 April 2019, the shirt was christened alongside the Castellers de Barcelona and the Castellers de la Vila de Gràcia, the colla’s godparents, at the first diada organised by the colla ‘empetxinada’.
More than castellers, we are Sarrià-Sant Gervasi.
We stick together, we make a community!
